MY EURO-CENTRIC EDUCATION/
Whose Feminism is it anyway?

I was a feminist at ten years old. I’d never even heard of suffrage till I was in college in the US. I was 21 then. My grandmother could not read or write. She signed her name as an X. I remember seeing it for the first time when we got a delivery. We were a house of women of multiple generations. My family happens to be matriarchal. I taught all my female cousins to play pool, and win.  My feminism was rooted in my arabness in the beginning, yet that has never been a perspective I have seen in the narrative of women’s liberation. Feminism is always claimed by Western women, as Western history and positioned in relation to the backwardness of the Other.

Returning to Morocco at the age of 14 saved me. The girlfriends that came into my life taught me how to love myself. I was 15 or so when I first proudly wore my hair out, giant, like a tree, like a life, unruly wild and unwavering.
CUT. Pinned back, slicked down, braided out, chemically washed, lightened, straightened. They undid that and I saw myself through their eyes.

“Feminism of color provides us with ways of thinking through power in terms of “intersectionality”, to think about and through the point at which power relations meet. A body can be a meeting point. A concern with meeting points requires that we attend to the experiential: how we experience one category depends on how we inhabit the others”

Jayou

She creates and enacts bodies of knowledge, and at the same time reflecting on the very nature of knowledge itself, a branch of philosophy called Epistemology.
And poetry.

She is a thing of beauty, holding within her belly and her walls, and all the minds infinite amounts of knowledge about the world.

An institution, holding in repertoires, her vast archives and libraries, knowledge
her intricate systems of citation and categorization
her insatiable thirst to know more.

She dominates the universe on many dimensions,
She is interested in the heavens above and the ground beneath, and the social worlds in between.

I am Unlearning them
